Scope and Contents

The collection consists mostly of photographs collected by Mendez, along with newspaper clippings surrounding major events. There are also several articles about this period in West Tampa history. In addition to the main body of the collection, there are also 35 mm slides, audio recordings of radio broadcasts, and VHS tapes of news reports on Tampa history.

Abstract

The collection consists of the organized materials left behind by Armando Mendez following his research for his book Ciudad De Cigars: West Tampa (1994). The materials cover the tobacco industry and provide information and photographs relating to dozens of factories representing dozens of companies. There are also materials related to West Tampa historic places and people, such as former mayors, schools, and churches.
