Biographical or Historical Information

The Krewe of the Knights of Sant’ Yago arose from the brotherhood of the "Caballeros" Royal Order of St. James. St. James was a disciple of Jesus Christ and was a prominent figure in Spain. In AD 44 he was executed by Herod Agrippa in Jerusalem. His followers brought his body back to Spain and this sparked a pilgrimage for Christianity, called “The Way of St. James." By the 12th century war threatened the safety of passage for pilgrims and a brotherhood of knights arose to protect Christians on pilgrimage: they were called the Knights of Sant’ Yago. Today the Krewe of the Knights of Sant’ Yago is a local Tampa, Florida organization that has dedicated itself to the perpetuation and enhancement of the city's proud Latin heritage and culture. The Krewe was established in 1970 by Dr. Henry J. Fernandezand and by 1972 the first gathering was held. Currently there are 300 members that uphold the Latin traditions. The Krewe participates in the annual Gasparilla Pirate Festival in Tampa, Florida, including the Knight Parade where they raise funds for charity.
