Scope and Contents

This collection, which chronicles African American history in the Tampa Bay area, consists of materials produced by Betty P. Brown Wiggins and B.P. Brown Enterprises, Inc. for churches, schools, businesses, clubs, and fraternities and sororities. Souvenir program books, calendars, brochures, invitations, wedding programs, church offering envelopes, letterheads, stationary, business cards, funeral announcements, and advertising for Bethal Community Baptist Church, Middleton Senior High, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the National Council of Negro Women, the Tampa Housing Authority, and others are also included.

Biographical or Historical Information

Betty P. Brown Wiggings was the president and owner of the printing company B.P. Brown Enterprises, Inc. Located at 5204 N. 34th Street in East Tampa, B.P. Brown Enterprises, Inc. printed church histories and programs, wedding invitations, annuals, stationery, and other documents for Tampa's Black community for 10 years.

Wiggins earned a bachelor's degree in English from Florida A&M University and a master's degree in Education from the University of South Florida. In 1998, she was selected by Tampa City Council to complete the remaining term of Councilman Joe Greco upon his appointment as Hillsborough County Tax Collector. Wiggins received numberous awards and honors for outstanding public volunteer service and for leadership roles in community organizations.
