Biographical or Historical Information

Prompted by allegations that the bullet evidence in the Robert F. Kennedy assassination case indicated involvement by a second gunman, on September 18, 1975 Superior Court Judge Robert A. Wenke ordered a reexamination of the firearms evidence. The court appointed Patrick Garland and six other prominent forensic firearms experts to conduct the reexamination and determine if the firearms-related evidence provided any basis for the second gunman theory. Elected chairman of the expert panel by his colleagues, Garland coordinated the panel's work and presented its findings to the court. The panel concluded that, contrary to claims, there was no difference in the number of cannelures on the bullets, no difference in rifling clarity or angles not accounted for by impact damage, and that nothing in the firearms evidence indicated that a second gun was used in the Kennedy assassination.
