Scope and Contents

This collection contains the records of the Tampa Branch of the American Association of University Women. The records, which cover the time period 1917 through 2007, include various publications of the organization including minutes, scrapbooks, newspapers, journals, magazines, and yearbooks. Also included in the collection are numerous convention pamphlets, correspondence, and financial papers for the Tampa Branch. The publications cover the Tampa Branch, the Florida Division, and the agency on a national level.

Biographical or Historical Information

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) was incorporated under the name of the Association of Collegiate Alumnae under a special act of the Massachusetts legislature in 1899, which also allowed for the development of branch associations. The name of the organization was changed in 1921 to the American Association of University Women. The purpose of the Association is the uniting of the alumnae of different institutions for practical educational work, for the collection and publication of statistical and other information concerning education, and for the maintenance of high standards of education.
