Biographical or Historical Information

Dr. Chaim Pozner [alternate spellings include: Chaim Pasner, Chaim Posner, Haim Pazner] was born in Poland in 1899 to a Jewish family. During his early adulthood, Pozner was active among Jewish and refugee organizations in Danzig, serving as director of the Committe of Assistance to Polish Refugees in Danzig (1920-1922), a delegate at the 12th Zionist Congress (1921), and as a leader of the Labor Zionist Movement in Danzig (1931-1937). Pozner also served as a director for the Jewish Agency in Danzig before obtaining a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Basel in 1939. Pozner remained in Switzerland, where he served as the Director of the Jewish Agency for Palestine in Geneva (1940-1948) and as a member of the Jewish Agency Finance Department. Pozner also represented the Jewish Agency as an envoy to the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration. Pozner was later affiliated with the Israel Finance Ministry, the University of Geneva, the Foreign Currency Department of the Finance Ministry in Jerusalem, and the Israeli Embassy. Pozner retired from service in 1962 and passed away in 1981. [1] Within Holocaust scholarship, Pozner is recognized as one of the first officials to learn of the Final Solution in 1942. Pozner learned of the Nazi's extermination plans through correspondence from German economists Edgar Salin and Arthur Sommer. The majority of primary and secondary source materials related to Chaim Pozner are written in the Hebrew language and/or are housed in the Yad Vashem Archives in Israel. [1]
