Biographical or Historical Information

Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla, a civic organization based on the legend of the pirate Jose Gaspar, began as a suggestion from George W. Hardee when the city of Tampa wanted to enhance their May Festival. In 1904, the group dressed up as pirates and invaded the city during the May Festival Parade. The invasion was a success and the Gasparilla Pirate Festival continues annually as one of the country’s largest outdoor celebrations.
