Biographical or Historical Information
The Havana-American Cigar Company in Ybor City, Florida was the first cigar manufacturing firm to locate in Florida, and was involved, along with ten other cigar factories, in the Havana-American Company manufacturers trust. The Ybor City factory was opened in 1894 after a series of labor disputes with Cuban and Italian workers in the factory’s original location in Key West. It was later forced to reorganize in 1900 following the passing of anti-trust laws. Three Tampa factories were transferred to the American Cigar Company. The American Cigar Company closed its Tampa operations in 1932.
