Archibald Slaymaker Glass Plate Negative collection

Abstract

This collection is comprised of glass plate negatives and black and white photographs.The collection is largely family-centric, documenting the home and social life of the Slaymaker family in Virginia's Albemarle County during the years leading up to the Civil War. The collection also includes the typescript of a Slaymaker family history in the 20th century written by Addison Slaymaker, a Tampa resident and the donor of this historic photograph collection.

Abstract

This collection consists of assorted black and white photographs of a personal nature and studio postcards. Images mostly consists of portraits or groups of people. Also included are scenes of the following nature: beaches, boats and boating, outdoors, buildings, street scenes, churches, military portraits, etc. An inventory list is included with the collection that provides specific metadata, when available, at the item level.

Custance-Douglas correspondence

Abstract

Lord Alfred Bruce Douglas (1870-1945) eloped with Olive Custance (1874-1944), the daughter of Colonel Frederic Hambleton Custance (1844-1925), in 1902. They had their first and only child, Raymond, in the same year. Colonel Custance did not approve of their relationship, perhaps because of Lord Alfred's association with Oscar Wilde (1854-1900).

Scope and Contents

This collection contains photographs and information regarding the Cuban Club of Tampa and the Centro Asturiano de Tampa.  The collection is divided into two series: photographs and printed ephemera.  One of the photographs is accompanied by a note card identifying a few of the people therein.  However, most of the photographs are unidentified.  The collection contains 6 photographs and a boxing poster photo that has been mounted on canvas.

Stokes along the route of the Orange Belt Railway (later the Sanford & St. Petersburg Railway), which became part of the Plant System of Railways.
